Air Fried Filet o’ Fish

As a child I was a big McDonald’s fan.  I mean, who didn’t love a good Happy Meal?  However, we all know McDonald’s isn’t going to help us reach our fitness and nutrition goals.  But when I saw this recipe online, I definitely got curious!  Being pescatarian, I love new recipes that include fish, but also can be made with “cleaner” ingredients.

I can tell you I was pleasantly surprised, and a bit nostalgic, when I took a bite of this sandwich.  It’s quick and easy to make, and delicious.  You have to try it!

Tartar Sauce Ingredients:

  • 50 grams Non-Fat Greek Yogurt

  • 25 grams Light Mayo

  • 30 grams Dill Relish

  • 5 grams Parsley (fresh or dried will work)

  • 5 grams Yellow Mustard

  • 1 tsp Dill Weed

  • ½ tsp Onion Powder

  • ½ tsp Fresh Ground Black Pepper

  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice

Other Ingredients/Toppings:

  • Brioche buns

  • Your choice of greens

    • If you are going for the true McDonald’s feel, then shredded lettuce it is!

  • Reduced Fat American Cheese

    • This is optional, but again, if you want that true McDonald’s feel, then you’ll have to add cheese.

  • Sliced Red Onion

    • I love red onions on a fish sandwich.  Feel free to add whatever other toppings you desire.

Instructions:

  • First you will add all the tartar sauce ingredients to a small bowl and mix until smooth.

  • Next, you will prepare your three bowls for coating your fish.

    • Add the flour to one bowl.

    • The liquid egg whites will be added to a second bowl.

    • In a third bowl you will add the plain Panko bread crumbs, chili powder, black pepper and salt and mix together.

Fish Patty Ingredients:

  • 1 Whole White Fish Filet (your choice), cut into sandwich-sized pieces

    • I used Mahi

  • 30 grams Flour (your choice)

    • I used all purpose flour, but you can also use oat or almond flour.

  • 50 grams Liquid Egg Whites

  • 50 grams Plain Panko Bread Crumbs

  • ½ tsp Chili Powder

  • ½ tsp Fresh Ground Black Pepper

  • ½ tsp Himalayan Pink Salt

Coat your fish by first dipping it in the flour, then the liquid egg whites and finally the seasonings.

  • Once the fish is well coated, place it in an air fryer and spray lightly with olive oil.

  • Air fry at 400 degrees for 9 to 11 minutes.

  • Toast your brioche buns, assemble your sandwich and enjoy!
